The Racecourse

Innovation is movement through systems.

The Innovators Racecourse is a way of observing how ideas move through organisations, markets, institutions and cultures.

Rather than beginning with a methodology, it begins with observation.

Like a rider studying a course before a race, innovators benefit from understanding the environment they are about to enter. The Racecourse provides a language for noticing patterns, recognising signals and interpreting the responses of the system around them.

As you move around the course you will encounter observations, metaphors and recurring landmarks drawn from years of working alongside innovators, founders and change-makers.

The purpose is not to provide answers.

It is to help innovators engage with reality.

What signals can you see?

  • Where is attention focused?

  • Who appears engaged — and who seems detached?

  • Are conversations aligned or fragmented?

  • Is momentum building, hesitating or waiting?

Small cues often reveal how the system around an innovation is responding.
