Art - Racing - Innovation

Many ideas about leadership begin in boardrooms or strategy documents.

The Innovators Racecourse began somewhere quite different

​​Over the years I have spent time observing innovation from many vantage points — working alongside founders and executives building new ventures, drawing and painting the people and environments around me, and spending long hours around racecourses and equine activities, both riding and watching races unfold.

A racecourse is a carefully designed environment. Horses and riders enter a system already shaped by rules, obstacles, timing and competition. Success depends not only on the strength of the horse, but on how well the rider reads the course and positions themselves within it.

Racecourses exist everywhere.

Innovation does too.

 

So over time I began to see innovation in a similar way.

Ideas do not emerge into empty space. They enter systems already shaped by institutions, incentives and competing interests. Progress depends not only on the brilliance of the idea, but on how the environment is read and navigated.

​​​

Alongside this work with innovators, drawing and painting became a way of observing how ideas move through systems.

 

Like sketches made in a notebook, these images capture moments of interaction, attention and movement within systems. Art became my way of seeing patterns that are often difficult to describe in words.

 

The images that appear throughout this site — and in The Innovators Racecourse — invite the reader to observe first, interpret second, and only then arrive at the models and understanding that follow.

From these observations,  The Innovators Racecourse began to take shape — An immersive journey  where art, equine experience and system thinking reveal how ideas move through complex environments.

Over time aa pattern became visible. Three interdependent capabilities began to recur in how innovators move through the course​​

Abstraction

Articulation 

Alignment

Together these form the 3A Leadership Architecture.​

  • ​Abstraction enables clarity.

  • Articulation makes tha clarity visible to others

  • Alignment allows coordinated movement.

​Technical leaders often master complexity.


Scaling and board-ready leaders master abstraction, articulation and alignment.

 

That is the difference between invention and impact.
