The Innovators Racecourse illustrating innovation as a race through complex systems

The Art & Architecture of Scaling
Developing the judgement to navigate increasingly complex systems.

Most conversations about innovation begin with the innovation itself.

The technology

The product

The business model

The investment

The process

The Art & Architecture of Scaling began somewhere quite different

It begins with the innovator

Innovation never emerges into empty space

Every idea enters a living system already shaped by people, organisations, regulations, incentives and competing priorities.

As the innovation develops, the environment responds. Complexity increases.

Scaling is not simply the growth of an innovation.

It is the progressive development of capability within the innovator, the venture and the ecosystem.

That observation became the foundation of this work.

The word Architecture reflects the enduring principles that can be studied, designed and developed.

The word Art recognises that applying those principles requires judgement, perception, adaptation and experience.

Architecture provides the principles.

The art develops the judgement to apply them.

Throughout this work I explore how innovators develop those capabilities through observation, experience and engagement with reality.

The journey begins with the innovator.

The Innovators Racecourse

Observing the realities innovators encounter as they move through increasingly complex environments.

The Trainer's Yard

Developing the capabilities required to engage those environments more effectively.

Art as Observation

Using imagery and metaphor to reveal patterns that words often miss.

See the system surrounding the innovation

Develop the judgement to navigate complexity
