Obstacles and Signals
When riders walk a racecourse they study more than the fences. They observe the terrain, the spacing between obstacles and the subtle signals that reveal how the race may unfold.
Innovation unfolds across a similar landscape. Some signals appear while walking the course — before an idea enters the system. Others only become visible once the innovator is riding, with a venture already in motion.
Signals and obstacles can emerge at any point around the course. Some originate from the environment — institutions, partners, competitors and markets responding to the idea. Others come from the innovator themselves, revealing how they are interpreting and communicating the opportunity.
These signals often reveal the presence — or absence — of the three leadership capabilities: Abstraction, Articulation and Alignment.
Many of the signals we observe in innovators themselves form the basis of the Rider Archetypes, explored elsewhere on the course.
Several recurring signals appear on the Innovator’s Racecourse and are explored further in
Two Familiar Signals
The Docu Slide
A slide overloaded with dense text and analysis often signals that the innovator is still working through complexity rather than expressing the opportunity. What appears to be a presentation problem is often something else.
The Polite Nodding Room
In many innovation discussions the room appears supportive — heads nod and the conversation moves on. Yet afterwards no one commits resources or action. This often signals that alignment has not yet formed.

Signals like these appear constantly when innovation moves through systems. Try for yourself.

What signals can you see?

-
Where is attention focused?
-
Who appears engaged — and who seems detached?
-
Are conversations aligned or fragmented?
-
Is momentum building, hesitating or waiting?

Small cues often reveal how the system around an innovation is responding.

Several recurring signals such as Conversation Misalignment, Failure to Commit and Ecosystem Momentum appear in moments like this and are explored further in The Innovators Racecourse
